About the project

I’m Chris Angel, a photographer based in Sutton Coldfield.

Everyone has something that draws them back. It might be a craft, a routine, a skill or a passion.

The Thing They Do is a documentary photography project about those moments of complete absorption—the work, hobbies and routines that become part of who we are. I’m less interested in simply recording what someone does than in revealing the skill, pride and purpose behind it. These moments can pass unnoticed, yet they tell us something meaningful about the people who live them.

How I work

I arrive as a guest, not as a photographer.

There is no script, staging or pressure to perform. I spend time with people while they do what they would normally do, letting each story unfold at its own pace. Conversation may happen; quiet moments are just as valuable.

My aim isn’t perfection. It’s authenticity.
